With the recent release of the PS4 Jailbreak for Firmware 9.00, many users are questioning how to update to 9.00 without going “too far” and accidentally installing 10.03. Note that after you install 10.01, you can’t go back to 9.00.
Manually updating your PS4 is straightforward and only takes downloading the appropriate firmware update file onto a USB stick. Check out our brief tutorial below for help:
Requirements
A USB Key with 2GB of space (you might get away with less, but worst case scenario you have a 1GB update file to fit on there)
PS4 Firmware 9.00 Download
It should be noted that you can use either the recovery or retail firmware. Retail firmware is often smaller than recovery firmware (and needed only if you have booting issues with your current PS4 firmware).
The PS4 Firmware 9.00 may be downloaded from the Internet Archive here: Click here
If you don’t want to put too much load on the archive.org servers, there are also torrent links for the retail and recovery versions: Click here
You may also acquire retail and recovery firmware from Darksoftware’s website (login required).
Prepare a USB key and install the firmware update on it.
From here, we just follow the regular manual upgrade methods stated on PlayStation’s official website:
- flaws, flaws, flaws, flaws, flaws (other formats might not be recognized by your PS4)
- Create a folder called PS4 in the root of your USB key. Create a folder called UPDATE within that folder.
- Within the UPDATE folder, place the PS4UPDATE.PUP file (the 9.00 Firmware file you just downloaded).
- You should now have the update file on your USB stick, which should look like this: X: PS4\UPDATE\PS4UPDATE.PUP
Upgrade your PS4 to version 9.00
- Before turning on your PS4, make sure it is not linked to the internet (either unplug the LAN cable or turn off your Wifi router for a moment). This ensures that the PS4 receives the 9.00 update from your USB stick rather than attempting to download 9.03 from the internet.
- Insert the USB device with the system update file into the PS4 console.
- On your PS4, go to Settings > System Software Update. The console should recognize 9.00 from your USB stick and let you proceed with the installation.

If everything went correctly, your console should reset and you should now be on 9.00. Congrats!
Note: If you’re afraid or experiencing problems, reset your PS4 in safe mode and choose Update System Software > Update from USB storage. This procedure may only work with recovery firmware.
